SURF Break – Recap: AEHS West Coast Conference

Even the most experienced social media influencer would have been impressed by SURF’s content on the first full day of the AEHS (Association for Environmental Health and Sciences Foundation) West Coast Conference in San Diego, California. Nine presentations comprised our technical sessions, which included two case studies featuring remediation technologies selected to finally achieve closure. In both cases, regulatory agencies issued no further action determinations. Our SURF Meeting at the end of the day was designed to allow participants to interact and collaborate rather than listen. With the current political environment and new direction of the Trump Administration, the group discussed two hypothetical case studies from the perspectives of the responsible party and consultant, community member, and regulator. The resulting discussions highlighted overlapping and differing values, reinforcing the need for transparency, cooperation, and collaboration when remediating contaminated sites.
