Since 1997, EPA Headquarters personnel have been performing site-specific optimization reviews; making recommendations about things like remedy effectiveness, cost, and energy and material efficiency; and providing technical support to Superfund sites.

The second progress report of these efforts, Superfund Optimization Progress Report August 2025, provides a summary of projects completed during fiscal years (FY) 2018 through FY 2022. Six key results are highlighted, as shown in the graphic above, along with the percentage of the projects demonstrating that outcome. (Note that some projects demonstrate multiple outcomes.) Remedy vulnerability assessments are also included in the report; extreme weather considerations have been part of the reviews since 2021. Click here to read the report.
