SURF Break – Dive In! Sustainability Assessment of PFAS Destruction in Water

In the December issue of Remediation, authors Mohamed and Reddy assess and compare the sustainability of incineration to electrochemical oxidation, and ultraviolet advanced oxidation processes in terms of their effectiveness in eliminating per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from polluted water.

Environmental impacts were analyzed through a life-cycle assessment, social impacts were measured using the SSEM (Social Sustainability Evaluation Matrix), and economic impacts were evaluated using direct and indirect costs. These three evaluations were then integrated using the Integrated Value Model for Sustainability Assessment (MIVES) approach to determine the overall net impact. Click here to read the article.
