Department of Energy & FRTR GSR Online Training Opportunities

Two online training opportunities: June 2 and June 10, 2015

Thanks to the efforts of SURF, Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council (ITRC), and the Federal Remediation Technology Roundtable (FRTR), Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management will be offering Green and Sustainable Remediation (GSR) training via webex, as detailed below.  This is a huge success to begin implementation of GSR across DOE at cleanup sites. The work of SURF and others has permeated the breadth of DOE and that is a huge step forward that many have worked toward since 2009.

The implementation of GSR has the potential for life-cycle cost benefits and is shown to reduce the environmental footprint of remedial and closure actions. I recommend you attend a webinar on GSR on June 2 from 1 to 3 pm EDT. This learning opportunity is sponsored by Headquarters’ offices of Site Restoration (EM-10) and Sustainability Support (AU-21) and hosted by the Volpentest Hazardous Materials Management and Emergency Response (HAMMER) Federal Training Center at the Richland Operations Office.

This free webinar, jointly prepared by representatives of the FRTR, including the DOE Headquarters, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Environmental Protection Agency, Navy, Air Force, and Army, encourages the use of sustainable practices in EM’s cleanup, deactivation and decommissioning, and closure missions. The program will include representatives from DOE, USACE, and the Navy.  They will provide an overview of GSR that will be useful to DOE managers, regulators, and scientific and engineering staff interested in evaluating the environmental footprint of remedial alternatives for more sustainable decision-making. It consolidates concepts and definitions, and addresses basic questions to apply GSR to projects: what, who, why, and how. Federal agency GSR contract and incentive language will be discussed. Case studies, environmental footprint evaluation software, and other resources for implementing GSR also will be presented.

This training will also be offered by FRTR on EPA's CLU-IN website on June 10 from 1 to 3 pm EDT. Registration for the June 10 event is available here.
