ASTM Sustainable Guide Published
ASTM released the Standard Guide for Integrating Sustainable Objectives into Cleanup (designation E2876), which "…provides an overarching, consistent, transparent and scalable framework that helps the user identify and incorporate sustainable best management practices into site cleanup…" Several SURF members participated in developing this guide over the past several years and its release has been much anticipated.
The original plan was to have the ASTM guide incorporate both Green and Sustainable Remediation (GSR) into a single guide, but as the original team worked on the project it was decided to separate the two into two separate (i.e., green and sustainable) teams and documents. The Green Cleanup Standard Guide may be released later this year.
The two ASTM guides will join SURF's White Paper (2009) and the Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council's (ITRC's) GSR-2 (2011) as key US-based GSR publications. Similar to the SURF and ITRC documents, the new ASTM guides may become frequently referenced documents, especially for best management practices. Together, these publications provide a compelling justification for and how to implement sustainable remediation.
