SURF 17 - May 19-20, 2011 - Chicago, IL

SURF is excited to announce that our next meeting will be located at the U.S. EPA Region 5 headquarters in Chicago, Illinois.

SURF 17 will be held Thursday-Friday, May 19 and 20, 2011, following on the heels of the RemTEC Summit 2011.

The theme for our upcoming meeting is “The Incorporation of Green and Sustainable Remediation into Projects at the State and Federal Level within Region 5”.

Program Highlights:

Brad Bradley, Superfund Green Remediation Coordinator for Region 5, will moderate an interactive panel discussion.  Panelists from federal and state environmental agencies will discuss the following topics and more:

  • The current state of green and sustainable cleanups in the Region 5 area;
  • The policies and initiatives that are being developed or implemented, and which are working and why;
  • The incorporation, use, and adoption of historical policies and other initiatives; and
  • How social impacts and benefits are being considered or incorporated.

There will also be a keynote address by Robert Colangelo, Executive Director of the National Brownfields Association, and additional presentations by Henry Henderson, Director of the Midwest Program of the Natural Resource Defense Council, and Dick Raymond, President of Terra Systems, on the P.L.A.C.E.S. Program.

SURF's technical and outreach initiatives will also have the opportunity to meet and discuss their activities, objectives, and goals for the upcoming year.

Planning for the meeting is ongoing.  Additional information will be posted to the SURF website's meeting Agenda and Bulletin Board pages as it becomes available.  Registration will be open in mid-April.

ATTEND SURF 16 IN TAMPA, FLORIDA!

Sustainable Remediation: Improving Water Resources in Florida and Beyond

The Sustainable Remediation Forum (SURF) invites you to attend the 16th meeting of the SURF community!  SURF promotes the use of sustainable practices during implementation of remedial action activities with the objective of balancing economic viability, conservation of natural resources and biodiversity, and the enhancement of the quality of life in surrounding communities. 

SURF 16 will be held at the Marshall Student Center at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa, Florida on February 3 and 4, 2011.  Our hosts for SURF 16 are:

  • Dr. Kiran C. Patel Center for Global Solutions at the University of South Florida
  • The University of South Florida School of Global Sustainability
  • The University of South Florida College of Engineering

The program for SURF 16 is rapidly coming together!  We expect presentations and discussions from these business sectors and groups:

  • Aerospace 
  • Mining
  • Florida universities, including USF, University of Central Florida (UCF), and University of Florida (UF)
  • State and Federal Regulatory Agencies

We are also looking forward to having an invited panel of guests discuss past, present, and future responses to the Deepwater Horizon spill.

The program on February 3 will kick off at 8:30 am and will be devoted to educational and informative presentations and discussions from the sectors noted above.  The day will start with the Keynote Address from Kalanithy Vairavamoorthy, the leader of USF's School of Global Sustainability.  The day’s program will end at about 5:00 pm with our First Night Dinner to follow.

The program on February 4 morning will start at 8:30 am and be devoted to SURF committee activity and SURF business matters.  SURF standing committees include Communications and Outreach, Meetings and Programs, Membership, and Technical Initiatives.  SURF is engaged in several exciting technical initiatives, including:

  • Developing a consensus-based framework for sustainable remediation practices
  • Fostering standardized sustainable remediation criteria and metrics
  • Promoting consistency, transparency, and best practices for Life Cycle Assessment

All SURF members are encouraged and welcome to participate in our committees and initiatives.  New attendees will find that their contributions are warmly received.

The afternoon of February 4 will center on a presentation by Dave Dzombak from Carnegie Mellon University as part of the USF College of Engineering 2011 Eminent Scholars Lecture Series.  Dr. Dzombak is the 2010-2011 Distinguished Lecturer of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP).  Professors and masters students from USF, UF, and UCF will be attending the lecture and participating in a poster session. 

Meeting registration will be available the first week of January 2011.  Information on hotels, transportation, and our First Night Dinner are available on the SURF meeting bulletin board. More information will be posted as it becomes available.

SURF 15

SURF 15 will be held on October 5-6, 2010.  The meeting will be hosted by the Steinbrenner Institute for Environmental Education and Research at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  The meeting will be held in the Singleton Room in Roberts Engineering Hall at CMU.

The theme for SURF 15 is "Building Bridges Among Stakeholders."

SURF 14 and 15 - Meeting Announcements

SURF 14 will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 13 and 14, 2010 in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Big thanks to SURF member Tom Sale and Colorado State University for hosting the meeting.  Contact the SURF Meetings and Program Committee if you would like to help with meeting planning and preparation.

SURF 15 has been tentatively scheduled for October 5 and 6, 2010 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Our meeting host is Carnegie Mellon University.
